Stump Grinding

Professional Stump Grinding from Local Arborists

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It gets in the way of mowing, sends up sprouts, and can attract carpenter ants and other pests as it rots. Grinding is the fastest and least disruptive way to get rid of it.

Our stump grinders chew the stump and its main surface roots into mulch, down below the level of your lawn. There is no excavation and no large hole to fill. We grind stumps from trees we remove and stumps that have been sitting in your yard for years.

What Is Included

What Stump Grinding Includes

Grinding below grade

The stump is ground down below the surface so grass, mulch, or pavers can go over the top.

Surface root grinding

Visible roots that spread from the stump can be ground out at the same time so they stop catching your mower.

Cleanup your way

We can rake the grindings back into the hole as mulch or haul the excess away, whichever you prefer.

Multiple stumps

Have several stumps? Grinding them in one visit is more cost effective than doing them one at a time.

Common Questions

Stump Grinding FAQs

Straight answers from our arborists.

How deep do you grind a stump?

We grind below the surface of the surrounding lawn, deep enough for topsoil and grass to cover the spot. If you plan to replant a tree or build in the same place, let us know and we can grind deeper.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding produces a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. Many customers use it as mulch in garden beds. We can also haul the extra away and leave the hole ready for topsoil.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

It is better to plant a few feet away. The old root system and leftover grindings make it hard for a new tree to establish in the exact same spot.

What about underground utilities?

Underground lines need to be marked before grinding. In Michigan that is done through MISS DIG 811. We will go over this with you when we schedule the work.

Will you grind a stump from a tree you did not remove?

Yes. Stump grinding is available on its own, whether the tree came down last week or ten years ago.

Can your equipment get into my backyard?

Usually, yes. Tell us about gate width, slopes, and any obstacles when you call so we bring the right machine for your yard.
